Why dogs are honoured
Hindu traditions associate dogs with Bhairava and describe them as guardians connected with Yama. In daily life they protect, rescue, assist and share family life.
A dog-safe celebration
- Use a loose, lightweight garland and remove it if uncomfortable.
- Use only pet-safe, non-toxic colour away from eyes, nose and mouth.
- Avoid chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic and cooked bones.
- Never chase or restrain a frightened street dog for a photograph.
- Keep fireworks away and provide a quiet indoor place.
Beyond one day
Year-round care—clean water, vaccination, responsible adoption and kindness to community dogs—is the strongest tribute.
