The fourth day brings several traditions together: Govardhan Puja, honouring oxen, Newar Mha Puja and the Nepal Sambat new year.
Govardhan Puja and Goru Puja
Govardhan Puja recalls Krishna’s protection of the people of Braj. In Nepal, households may create a symbolic Govardhan form and honour oxen for their contribution to farming.
Mha Puja: worship of the self
Mha Puja is a distinctive Newar tradition centred on purification, wellbeing and self-respect. Family members sit before individual mandalas and receive ritual offerings.

Respect differences
Govardhan Puja and Mha Puja are not interchangeable. Ask before photographing and avoid presenting one family’s custom as the only correct version.
